MAKING

LOOSE LEAF TEA

***Two Things To Know***

1. Water temperature and type:                                  100% fresh almost boiled water.

2. The time of tea steeping in the water.

A Simple Way to Make Loose Leaf Tea

Use hot fresh good quality water                         (close to boiling, but boiling is not recommended)

Heat water in a tea pot or pot (or perk water in a coffee pot is the simplest way  (recommended))

Rinse the tea leaves with hot water prior to making tea

1) Tea comes from natural mountain areas, so rinsing removes dust

2) Tea is aged, so some natural fungus or mold might be on it and this is part of a natural fermentation or aging process, so rinsing tea leaves removes this easily and quickly.

3) Put about 4-6 heaping tablespoons of the tea in a teapot or a container, pour in some hot water, and pour out the water immediately. Repeat the rinsing a 2nd time

4) The tea leaves are sufficiently rinsed after just 5 seconds per rinsing

Now to start making the tea:

1) Pour the amount of hot water desired for drinking into the teapot or other container; let the leaves soak for about 8 to 10 minutes on the first steep, which should produce a reddish golden dark color

2) Pour hot tea from tea pot or other container into the drinking glass or cup and it is ready for drinking.  Do not let tea steep too long or it will get a very strong taste.

3) Do not throw out the tea leaves.  The same leaves can be used all day long, making many cups or glasses throughout the day

4) With each time, let the tea steep a few seconds to a minute or so longer if necessary to get the same reddish golden dark color.  After about 10 cups, you might be steeping about a 1-3 minutes, or just slightly longer

5)You want to see the same consistency in color that you will see on the first steep.  The leaves are enough to make about a gallon of tea still with the many benefits of the tea.  It is possible to get more than a gallon of tea.

6) Let the leaves remain wet in the teapot or container and it is good for reusing the entire day

7) If you let the tea steep too long and you find the flavor too strong, just simply add more hot water.  As you drink, you’ll know how strong to make it to get the best flavor you like.

The Loose Leaf Tea sold at Regimen Health Center is a high quality tea and the leaves can be reused throughout the day, making up to a gallon or more.  Only throw out the leaves at the very end of the day.  When making a lot of tea to share with friends, if the color remains lighter than desired after 5 minutes of steeping, you can either steep a little longer up to 10 minutes, or add a few extra tea leaves, but do not throw out the original tea leaves.  Throw out tea leaves at the end of the day, and start the next day with fresh tea leaves.

For economy & not wasting the tea leaves, at the end of the day, before throwing out the tea leaves, try to make a last batch by adding hot water, letting it steep to the right color, then the tea can be poured through a strainer into a storage container to be placed in the refrigerator.  Tea in liquid form can be refrigerated up to 4 days, but should be completely consumed by the 4th day.  So, on Day 1, 2 & 3, make and drink as much as possible, then Day 4 drink any excess tea either cold, or heat it up as you need it.  This process might help get up to 25% more tea from the tea leaves.

Another way to make tea is to make it by the gallon:

1)Put 4-6 heaping tablespoons in a gallon glass or ceramic pitcher

2)Brew water in a coffee maker (best way to get desired temperature, boiling water is not necessary)

3)Pour hot water into the pitcher until it is full of hot water

4) The tea leaves will float on the top for a while, but will eventually fall to the bottom.

5) When the majority of the tea leaves have fallen to the bottom, the tea should appear dark enough and be ready for drinking.  This should take several minutes to an hour to occur

6) Drink it hot, warm or cold, the health benefits are all the same

7) If keeping overnight, refrigerate

8) When pouring, use a strainer to keep loose leaves out of the drinking cup

9) The leaves can stay in the bottom of the pitcher until all the tea is consumed, then throw away the leaves, or add more hot water to make more, if desired color is not achieved after a few minutes, add a few more fresh leaves to the leaves already in the container

Notes:

Today’s brewed tea, kept in the refrigerator by the first evening is good for up to 4 days in case a batch is not consumed right away
